The Bacas of New Mexico

Cristobal Baca, legitimate son of Juan de Vaca, native of Mexico City, of good stature, swarthy, well-featured, 33 yers of age... From a description in "The Eden of La Cienega" by George C' De Baca.

As a young boy I often heard stories of my mother's family,  the Bacas of New Mexico. They were one of the original European families to settle in "Northern Mexico". It began in 1600 when Crisotobal Baca (Vaca), a captain in the army, ventured north on a four month journey from Nueva Vizcaya (currently called Durango, Mexico) with his family to reinforce the Onate colony at San Gabriel. I think this is a little north of present-day Santa Fe, New Mexico. Included in the party were his wife, Dona Ana Ortiz, three grown daughters and a small son. Cristobal and Ana Baca are the progenitors of the Bacas of New Mexico.

Where does the name Baca come from? From Cabeza de Vaca (Head of a Cow). It has changed over the years to Baca. One branch of the family uses C' De Baca.
