Jose Maria Baca (1828 - >1910)
The following information is taken from a copy of an application he made in 1910 for a pension a a survivor of the Indian War. - Henry John Hein Jose Maria Baca was born in Santa Fe County, New Mexico on Sept. 24, 1828. His occupations were listed as rancher and freighter. He is described as 5 foot 8 inches, having blue eyes, black hair and light complexion. He was twice married, both times in Anton Chico, N. Mexico. He married Estefana Gallegos in 1848. Together they had 5 surviving children; Clara (1852), Paco (1854), Nestor (my grandfather, 1856), Juan (1858) and Crescencia (1860). He married Maria de la Paz, after his first wife died in 1871. Children from the second marraige were: Manuela (1873), Cleofas (1875), Juana (1881), Jose Maria (1884), Atanacio (1886) and Mateo (1888). Six children did not survive childhood. A Jose M. Baca of Las Colonias is listed as a Pioneer of the Santa Fe Trail - http://www.nmhu.edu/research/sftrail/pioneers.htm. It may be the same one as one of Jose Maria Baca's occupations was a freighter. I assume this to be someone who drove wagons. The Santa Fe Trail was the main highway between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains during the Westward Expansion.
