Max was born on Nov. 15, 1923 and passed away in December, 1991.

Until I posted the photo below, I never realized how much I am starting to look like him. I remember the Gardes sometimes teased my Mom by saying that I looked like a Garde. She'd reply " there's no Garde in him". What they meant is think is that I looked more like a Baca than a Hein or a Thome. I think Max looks more like a Baca while Mariano looks more like a Garde.

Max was a very interesting character. I recall that he owned a silver mine near Durango, Mexico and would go there for periods of time. When he showed me a pistol that he carried there for his protection, I had visions of him shooting it out with bandits like Humphrey Boagart in the "Treasue of the Sierra Madres".

Max and his wife Luz lived in San Francisco and had one son, Max Jr.
