Thome Family Tree -

Nicolaus Thome and Maria Margaretha Noesges,

Be sure to scroll down the page as there is a lot of information here.

The Thome family may be found on the 1900 Census, Wadena Township, County of Wadena, State of Minnesota, District 6, Enumeration District 212, Sheet 5, dated June 5, 1900.

Why the different spelling of names i.e Nicolaus v. Nicholas, Nesges v. Noesges? When a census was taken you gave your name to the census taker who wrote it down. Catherine might be written Katerine and vice versa. Nicolaus might be written Nicholas. Also people tended to "Americanize" their names so in the case of the 1900 census the Thomes appear a Nick, Margret, Katie, Mat, Tony, Joseph, John N., Peter, and Minrad.

Dot Clark (Dorothy J. (Poth) Clark is my recently discovered second cousin. Her Grandfather John Nicholas Thome was the brother to my Grandmother Katie.

About the Nesges (Noesges)

I don't have a lot of information. I did find a reference to Anton Nesges in my research.

Thanks to  her for providing the following information.

About the Thomes

Nicolaus was the son of Franz Thome and was born in Holzthum, in the Rheinland, just a short distance from the Luxembourg border. Franz was actually from Reisdorf, in Luxembourg.  Margaretha was born Maria Margaretha Noesges, daughter of Peter Noesges and Catharina Thielen, Peter's second wife.  She had a sister Susannah, who married John Bierscheid, and a brother, Joseph, who eventually moved to Oklahoma and his children went on to northern California.  By Peter's first marriage, there were three daughters (who apparently did not come to America) and two sons, Anton and Nicholas.  Some of Anton's descendants are still living on the property Anton got as a homestead grant in Otter Tail Co., MN.

Nicolaus Thome and "Maggie" Noesges were married in Dakota Co., MN in 1875.  Catherine was born in 1876 and Mathias in 1877.  Then sometime between the birth of Dorothea in 1879 and Anton in 1882, the Thome/Noesges family moved out to Compton Twp., Otter Tail Co. where Anton and Nick Noesges had homestead grants.  After Anton "Tony", there were two Marys, one born Mar 1884, died July 1884, and Mary, born 1885, died 1899 (you have her obit).  Then Joseph in 1887, John (my grandfather) in Nov 1889, Peter in 1891, and Meinrad in 1893.  I've never found any trace of Matt after 1902 when he witnessed a land transaction for his parents before their move to Colorado.

The family operated the Great Northern Hotel in Wadena, Minnesota (the building is still standing).  I have some newspaper accounts that reference him. Two refer to the death of daughters, Maria Thome (1885 - 5/171899) and Dorothea Thome (7/10/1880 - 2/20/1900). Both girls died of consumption (TB?). They are both buried in the Catholic Cemetery, Wadena, Minnesota at same gravesite as Reinhold Hein. The newspaper account of Reinhold Hein's death also mentions him.

As will be announced elsewhere one of the pioneer merchants of Wadena, in the person of John Becker, is about to go out of business for a while, and he advertises to close out his stock of general merchandise at greatly reduced prices. He desires to have everything closed out by the first of May, and it is his intention then to take a well earned rest. He contemplates spending a year or so in the state of Oregon, but does not expect to locate there permanently. Before he goes he expects to build a brick building on one of his vacant lots on the corner of Third and King streets, next to the Hotel Wadena, and has leased his present place to Nick Thoms (sic), who starts an eating houe and hotel in it the first of May, to run in connection to his boarding stable. Mr. Becker has been in business in Wadena for about twenty years, and is known all over the vicinity as an honest, upright, and sucessful business man. In anything he undertakes he will have the best wishes of many friends and former patrons.

A new boarding house was opened yesterday in the store building recently occupied by John Becker. The house will be called the Great Northern House and Nick Thoms (sic) is the proprietor.
