Pascal Garde was the eldest of my Aunt Frances' children.
He was born December 29, 1914 possibly around Colonias,
New Mexico. I have two photos of him one taken when he was several
months old and the other a newspaper clipping. I always thought
he looked a lot like his brother Mariano.. He was in the New Mexico
National Guard when it was federalized in January 1941. His unit
became part of the 515 Coast Artillery and shipped to the Phillipines
in September 1941. When the Phillipines fell to the Japanese in
early 1942 he was taken captive as a prisoner of war along with
his brother Arturo. Although they survived the Bataan Death March
Arthur died of dysentery in May 1942. Pascual was killed when the
Japanese ship, Arisan
Maru, carrying him to Japan was torpedoed by an American submarine
on 10/24/1944.
The clipping was in my mother's collection of photos.
I believe it was from the Albuquerque newspaper, probably mid 1942.
