One part of my mother's family, the Bacas, has been in North America since before 1600. They came from Spain initially as soldiers and conquistadors, later they turned to ranching and farming. The Bacas, along with about 100 other families, among them the Crespins, Luceros, Valdez and Gallegos, settled New Mexico. Spain continued to provide immigrants for New Mexico in later centuries, among them was my uncle Constantino Garde. The Crespins date back to the early 1700's.

In comparison my father's side are late comers arriving in America in the 1870's and 1880's as part of the large influx of Germans. They arrived not as conquerers but as farmers. One side, the Heins, come from the eastern part of Germany (Silesia, or Schliesen in German) and the others, the Thomes, from the extreme west, Trier, along the border of Luxembourg. They came first to Minnesota, then moved west to Colorado, then Texas.
